Minister for Defence Industry Christoper Pyne has confirmed a 25 per cent reduction in price of the Joint Strike Fighters (JSF) from 2014.

In address to Parliament, Minister Pyne confirmed he had spoken with the newly appointed US Secretary of Defense James Mattis about the cost reduction of the JSF program.

The new price agreement marks the first time that the unit price of these jets, which are being manufactured by prime contractor Lockheed Martin, is below US$100 million.

The previous order, which included 55 jets for the US and 35 for partners and Foreign Military Sale customers, was US$102 million per jet. The price now stands at around US$95 million per jet, a total reduction of US$7 million per jet.

"We [James Mattis and Christopher Pyne] talked about the fact that the price for lot 10 of the Joint Strike Fighter has been recently announced and has dropped below US$100 million for the first time," Minster Pyne said.

"For Australia this is hugely significant and represents a 25 per cent reduction from the price of the fighter in 2014, showing the program is on track in terms of delivery and efficiency."

The new agreement comes after US President Trump tweeted about the project on 12 December 2016, saying the spending was "out of control".

Lockheed said, "President Trump's personal involvement in the F-35 program accelerated the negotiations and sharpened our focus on driving down the price."

Pembelian Helikopter AW-101 Tetap Akan Dilanjutkan

17 Februari 2017

(photo : Suara Merdeka)

KSAU katakan pengadaan helikopter AW 101 sesuai prosedur

Sebelumnya, pembelian satu unit helikopter AW101 tipe VVIP menuai polemik. Menteri Pertahanan Ryamizard Ryacudu dan Panglima TNI Jenderal TNI Gatot Nurmantyo kompak menyatakan tidak tahu menahu soal pembelian Helikopter tipe VVIP ini.

Heli AW-101 di pangkalan udara Halim (photo : Antara)

Renstra 2015-2019

Pesawat Ilham Habibie R-80 Ditargetkan Terbang Perdana Tahun 2021

Technology Companies Join Australian National Positioning Project

16 Februari 2017

GMV, Inmarsat and Lockheed Martin have joined Australia's national positioning project (image : Spatial Source)

Geoscience Australia announced today that technology companies GMV, Inmarsat and Lockheed Martin have joined Australia's two-year national positioning project.

Geoscience Australia's Gary Johnston said that the project is trialling a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) to improve the accuracy of Australia's positioning.

"The SBAS test-bed is Australia's first exploratory step to joining countries such as the United States, Europe, China, Russia, India and Japan, which are already using the technology on a daily basis.

"This technology hasn't been widely tested in Australia before, however GMV, Inmarsat and Lockheed Martin have experience implementing it around the world.

Satellite positioning services such as GPS provide accuracy to within 5 metres which is suitable for some, but not all applications. (image : Geoscience Australia)

"The testing of SBAS technology in Australia offers a number of potential safety, productivity, efficiency and environmental benefits to many local industries, including transport, agriculture, construction, and resources.

"Research has shown that the wide-spread adoption of improved positioning technology has the potential to generate upwards of $73 billion of value to Australia by 2030," Mr Johnston said.

In January 2017, the Australian Government announced $12 million in funding for the trial of SBAS technology.

Mr Johnston said Geoscience Australia along with the Australia and New Zealand Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (CRCSI) are responsible for the implementation and oversight of the project on behalf of the Australian Government, but will be collaborating closely with GMV, Inmarsat and Lockheed Martin on the technical components of the test-bed.

Satellite delivery will ensure that accurate positioning information can be received by the user directly via satellites, anytime and anywhere within Australia. (image : Geoscience Australia)

"We'll be testing two new satellite positioning technologies - next generation SBAS and Precise Point Positioning - which provide positioning accuracies of several decimetres and five centimetres respectively."

Australia currently relies on the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) of other countries including the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS). These international systems typically give Australians positioning accuracy of five to 10 metres.

In March, Geoscience Australia and the CRCSI will call for organisations from a number of industries including agriculture, aviation, construction, mining, maritime, road, spatial, and utilities to participate in the test-bed.

Indonesia could be the first foreign customer for the DRDO-Embraer AEW&C system, designated Netra, within the next year, if interest from Jakarta is anything to go by. Livefist learns Indonesia, which first expressed interest in the system, has escalated its interest to a request for a systems demonstration, possibly in that country. The project has achieved initial operational clearance, with the first of two jets set to be handed over to its customer, the Indian Air Force, at the Aero India show — a terrific splash of an idea.

India’s DRDO has been ordered to aggressively and proactively pitch the new DRDO-Embraer AEW&C jet platform to foreign customers at Aero India 2017. With 52 countries at the show, the project team will hopefully have its hands full. Livefist can confirm the DRDO has received foreign interest (beyond preliminary enquiries) from Brazil itself, Israel and South Africa. “We have also received interest on just the sensor package developed by us for the platform, for fitment on other designated airborne platforms of countries in the interests of commonality or other compelling factors,” a member of the project told Livefist.

Joint Strike Fighter to make Australian debut at the Australian International Airshow

Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, and Minister for Defence Industry the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced that Australia’s two F-35A Joint Strike Fighters will make their first appearance in Australia at the Australian International Airshow.

Minister Payne said it was fitting the aircraft would make its first visit down under in time for the airshow, which comes one year after the Turnbull Government released the 2016 Defence White Paper that sets out a plan to create a more capable, agile and potent Australian Defence Force.

“The Joint Strike Fighter will be joined at the Airshow by Australia’s first EA-18G Growler,” Minister Payne said.

“Together, the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter and the EA-18 G Growler represent a potent and technologically advanced air combat and strike capability that is essential to our ability to defend Australia and our national interests.

“Australia is the only country outside the United States operating the EA-18G Growler and its arrival represents a significant leap forward in our capability, introducing a dedicated electronic attack capability for the first time.”

Minister Pyne said this would be one of the most exciting airshows the ADF had organised, representing a significant occasion for defence industry.

“The EA-18G Growler and F-35A Lightning II represent the latest in cutting edge aviation technology, and include some of the very best of Australian industry,” he said.

“This is an incredible opportunity for the Australian public to see the future of aviation.

“The F-35A will bring significant opportunities to Australian industry, with already over $800 million in local design and production work, which is expected to grow significantly as the programme matures and production increases,” Minister Pyne said.

“Australian industry will continue to benefit when the jets are in service after Australia was selected as the JSF sustainment and maintenance hub for Asia and the Pacific following negotiations with the United States during my visit in October,” Mr Pyne said.

The first two F-35A aircraft, AU-001 and AU-002 will arrive at the airshow on Friday 3 March, returning to the United States via RAAF Base Amberley allowing Australian pilots to continue their training. The visit is a significant contribution by the United States Air Force Training Command, and Lockheed Martin to facilitate the deployment from Luke Air Force Base during their training period.

The F-35A will enter Australian service from late 2018, to replace the ageing FA-18A/B ‘Classic’ Hornets. Australia is a strategic partner in the global F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program and has committed to 72 aircraft.
